There are many more, however, these are a few that express the consistent presence I offer both parents during perhaps one of the most significant experiences of their lifes. Generally parents that are tired, overwhelmed and unsure of their footing in a hospital room, where all the rules are held be others, need a good strong support to ensure they achieve those magical births they hear about! It's perhaps the most powerful experience of a woman's life and if she feels disempowered, or that her birth was a failure, it can take a lifetime for her to allow herself to overcome that grief and bond with her litte one.
Births sometimes medically NEED to receive the intervention! And thank God medical science is there today enabling the health of mother and child. That said, so often the need for speed in the birthing room, can intervene and C-Sections become the norm. While this is not the worst thing that can happen and we need to keep the best outcome for everyone , no matter the experience; a strong and empowered mother, celebrating all that happened!
I see that as my task in the labour room, to ensure both parents know they did the best and met all the challenges, coming through it, loved and deeply in love with their new little infant. - Kathy Welter-Nichols
